How one entrepreneur turned frustration with traditional education into a global franchise helping prepare kids for careers that don't even exist yet.

One of the biggest misconceptions in business is that opportunity comes from finding something completely new.
Most of the time, it doesn't.
Opportunity comes from noticing a problem everyone else has accepted as normal.
The most successful entrepreneurs don't invent demand.
They identify gaps.
And few gaps are growing faster today than the one between what schools teach and what the future workforce requires.
That's exactly what led Jeff Hughes to create Skill Samurai.
During a recent Fran Opps Live interview, Hughes shared a story that will resonate with many entrepreneurs who have spent years feeling like they didn't fit inside traditional systems.
Ironically, that inability to fit inside someone else's vision became the catalyst for building his own.
Hughes' story begins in a place many business owners know all too well.
Frustration.
For nearly two decades, he bounced between jobs, often finding himself at odds with leadership teams and organizational structures.
Looking back, he realized something important.
The problem wasn't necessarily the companies.
The problem was that he thought like an entrepreneur long before he became one.
As Hughes explained:
"I spent probably from the time I was 20 till I was 40 working lots of jobs that I didn't fit in with, thinking that I was a horrible employee."
He laughed as he reflected on it.
But beneath the humor was an important realization.
He wasn't wired to execute someone else's vision.
He was wired to create one.
At age 40, unemployed for the third time and unsure what came next, Hughes found himself trying to teach himself computer programming.
That experience would change everything.
While learning coding online, Hughes stumbled across educational models from countries like Estonia that were already teaching computer science comprehensively from kindergarten through high school.
Then he looked at what his own children were experiencing.
The contrast was shocking.
His local school had approximately 350 students.
It also had three outdated computers.
As Hughes recalled:
"How are my kids going to get jobs in the future if they don't even have computers?"
That question became the foundation of Skill Samurai.
But the issue wasn't simply about coding.
The deeper problem was that education moves slowly while the world moves fast.
Schools aren't failing.
They're constrained.
They're built around standardized testing, state requirements, and curriculum mandates.
Meanwhile, technology is evolving at a pace no traditional system can realistically match.
And that gap is only widening.
Most people assume schools prepare children for the workforce.
Increasingly, that's no longer true.
In fact, Hughes believes schools are being asked to solve an impossible problem.
They're expected to prepare students for jobs that haven't even been invented yet.
During the interview, he referenced a startling statistic:
"By 2030, 85% of the jobs that will exist don't exist yet."
Whether that exact percentage ultimately proves accurate is almost beside the point.
The larger reality is undeniable.
Artificial intelligence.
Automation.
Robotics.
Machine learning.
The speed of technological change is accelerating.
Many of the careers today's elementary school students will hold simply do not exist today.
That means memorization isn't enough.
Students need adaptability.
They need confidence.
They need problem-solving skills.
Most importantly, they need the ability to learn new technologies throughout their lives.
That's where Skill Samurai positions itself.
This is one of the biggest misconceptions prospective franchisees make.
Skill Samurai isn't really a coding company.
Coding is simply one of the vehicles.
The actual product is confidence.
The actual product is future readiness.
The actual product is helping children develop skills that remain valuable regardless of how technology changes.
Today, that includes:
-Coding
-Artificial intelligence
-Robotics
-Engineering
-STEM enrichment programs
Tomorrow, it may include something entirely different.
And that's precisely the point.
Unlike competitors that build their entire identity around a single technology or curriculum, Skill Samurai was intentionally designed to evolve alongside the marketplace.
As Hughes explained, many competitors have "coding" directly in their brand name.
The problem?
What happens if coding becomes less relevant over the next decade?
Skill Samurai's broader positioning gives franchisees far more flexibility to adapt as industries change.
That's an advantage many investors overlook.
One reason many prospective franchise buyers overlook educational concepts is because they assume the overhead is substantial.
Traditional learning centers often require expensive real estate, large facilities, and significant upfront investment.
Skill Samurai took a different path.
Rather than forcing franchisees into brick-and-mortar locations immediately, the company has seen tremendous success through what it calls its "On-The-Go" model.
Programs can operate inside:
-Schools
-YMCA facilities
-Churches
-Community centers
-Colleges
-Recreation facilities
This dramatically reduces overhead while increasing market reach.
Instead of waiting for students to find the business, franchisees bring the business directly to students.
One franchisee recently provided free coding classes to more than 600 students across two schools.
Every student left with information about after-school programs and summer camps.
It's a simple strategy.
But it's remarkably effective.
Many franchise concepts rely heavily on paid advertising.
Skill Samurai relies heavily on partnerships.
That distinction matters.
Hughes repeatedly emphasized the importance of building relationships with school principals, PTA organizations, teachers, librarians, and community leaders.
Those relationships become referral engines.
One owner in Seattle generated sixty enrollments from a single school partnership. Another secured placement on an official city camp directory, resulting in a sold-out camp program within two weeks.
No expensive advertising campaign.
No complicated marketing funnel.
Just strategic relationships.
In many ways, Skill Samurai behaves more like a relationship-driven service business than a traditional education company.
And that's one reason its growth model is so compelling.
One of the recurring themes we hear from prospective franchise owners is the desire for meaningful work.
People want financial success.
But increasingly, they also want significance.
They want to build something that matters.
Skill Samurai sits at an interesting intersection because it offers both.
Yes, franchisees are building businesses.
Yes, they are creating income.
But they're also watching children gain confidence, develop skills, and discover possibilities they may never have encountered otherwise.
Hughes described seeing students suddenly grasp a concept or become excited about technology for the first time.
For him, that's the real reward.
As he explained:
"You see these kids learn things and pick up things and develop things on their own. There's really nothing else quite like it."
That mission extends well beyond local communities.
During the interview, Hughes also shared Skill Samurai's involvement in global education initiatives, including supporting orphanages in Kenya and helping provide educational opportunities internationally.
That broader vision gives the brand a unique culture that many franchise systems struggle to replicate.
Most franchise buyers ask the wrong question.
They ask:
"Will this industry still exist ten years from now?"
The better question is:
"Will the problem this business solves still exist ten years from now?"
For Skill Samurai, the answer appears obvious.
Technology isn't slowing down.
Artificial intelligence isn't going away.
Parents aren't going to stop investing in their children's future.
And schools will likely continue facing challenges keeping pace with rapid technological change.
The gap that created Skill Samurai isn't shrinking.
It's growing.
That doesn't automatically make it the right franchise for everyone.
But it does make it one of the more interesting opportunities for entrepreneurs looking beyond restaurants, retail stores, and home services.
Because while many businesses solve today's problems...
Skill Samurai was built to solve tomorrow's.
Every great franchise begins with a simple observation.
Jeff Hughes observed that children were being prepared for a world that no longer existed.
Instead of complaining about it, he built a business around fixing it.
Today, Skill Samurai continues to grow by helping students develop the confidence, adaptability, and technical skills they'll need for a rapidly changing future.
For entrepreneurs looking for a business that combines recurring revenue, community impact, and long-term relevance, that's a conversation worth having.
Because in a world changing faster than ever before, teaching kids how to adapt may be one of the most valuable businesses you can build.
